Artificial neural networks is another term for computer-based neural networks, largely used when one wants to distinguish them from biological neural networks in the brain. This is most likely to be the case in more fundamental work where artficial networks are being used in neuroscience to understand brain behaviour or where novel algorithms are being developed based on brain neural analogies. In areas where the digital nature is clear the term neural network is used.
